A Little Fire (Burn Brighter) Song Devo | Week 8

Lyrics

You take a little fire and make it a roaring flame

You revive our souls and make them burn again . . .

Verse

. . . a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. Isaiah 42:3

Word

We have all probably felt burned out at least once in our lives. Once upon a time, a fire burned for our relationship with God and others, and eventually, that flame died down. Too often, we look to and trust in the wrong things in our attempt to scramble for and rekindle that desire. Some of us give up and lose our sense of value and purpose due to that lack of passion for God and life. How can we be revived? Is it through our efforts that this fire returns?

In the verse above, the prophet Isaiah is talking to the children of Israel at one of the lowest points in their history. Trapped under the weight of their rebelliousness and Babylonian captivity, their future looked hopeless. The great promises made to Abraham seemed like they would never be fulfilled. Even in their shame and brokenness, God brings good news of redemption to His people. Although they are bruised, He will not break them. The Holy Spirit continues to work even when a person's love for God is about to expire.

In the later chapters, Isaiah speaks about the power of the Spirit through the coming of the Messiah, who will revive His people. He will do this by bringing good news to the poor, binding up the brokenhearted, setting free the captives, and declaring favor. This is the rekindling work of our faithful God!

Application

1. What areas of your life need God’s rekindling power? Do you trust God completely to revive these areas?

2. Consider reading Isaiah 61:1–4, journaling about these areas that need rekindling, and praying for God to move by His Spirit.
